How to get the transcript of a TikTok video

TikTok is full of things worth keeping as text: a founder’s three-step pitch framework, a teacher’s explanation, a list of restaurants, a recipe said at double speed. But TikTok won’t let you copy what’s said, and the text creators put on screen is baked into the video. Here’s how to turn any TikTok into text in under a minute.

The quick answer

1. On the TikTok, tap Share → Copy link. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar.
2. Paste it into the box at the top of this page (or the TikTok transcript tool) and press Transcribe.
3. Copy the transcript — and the on-screen text, which comes back as a separate block.

Why TikTok’s own captions aren’t a transcript

TikTok can add auto-captions to videos, and creators can edit them. They’re made for watching, not for keeping:

• They appear a few words at a time during playback.
• You can’t select, copy or export them.
• They aren’t searchable — not in the video, and not across your Favorites.
• They only cover speech. Text the creator typed on screen, which is often the most important part, isn’t in them.

Typing it out

Fine for a ten-second clip. For anything longer it’s slow, and fast talkers make it painful.

Phone dictation

Play the TikTok on one device and dictate into a notes app on another. Works for clean speech; fails with music, trending sounds and multiple voices, which describes most TikToks.

Screenshots for on-screen text

Screenshot the text overlays and use your phone’s “copy text from image” feature. It works, one frame at a time, and you still need the audio separately.
