How to find the location of an Instagram reel or TikTok

A turquoise cove, a tiny pasta bar with a queue out the door, a hotel pool on a cliff — and not a word about where it is. The comments are forty variations of “where is this??” with no answer. The good news: most reels do say where they were filmed. The name is just hidden in the audio, a sticker, a sign, or paragraph four of the caption. Here’s how to find it.

1. Check the location tag

On Instagram, a tagged location appears above the caption on a reel (and on the reel itself on some versions of the app). Tap it to see the place page with other posts from the same spot. On TikTok, a location tag shows as a pin with the place name above the caption.

Tags are often vague — “Bali” or “Italy” — but they narrow the search a lot.

2. Read the whole caption and the pinned comment

Tap “more” on the caption. Creators often put the restaurant or hotel name at the very end, after the hashtags. Then check the pinned comment and the creator’s replies — when the same question is asked fifty times, they usually answer once.

3. Listen with the sound on

Travel creators say place names out loud far more often than they write them: “this is Pastéis de Belém”, “we drove up to Roys Peak”. If the reel is fast or noisy, turn on captions or use the transcript method to see every word.

4. Pause on signs, menus and stickers

Freeze frames on shop signs, menus, receipts, boarding passes and street names. A single legible sign is usually enough to search Google Maps. On-screen stickers and text overlays count too — they’re where creators put “📍 Positano”.

5. Use a location finder that does all of the above

6. Reverse image search a screenshot

For a famous landmark, take a screenshot of the clearest frame and run it through Google Lens or another reverse image search. It reliably identifies well-known places, and rarely identifies a specific café or beach club. Use it as a last resort.

A note on privacy

Finding a restaurant or a beach from a travel reel is what creators want — that’s why they post them. Using these methods to locate a private person’s home or whereabouts is not okay, and a location finder built for travel reels isn’t designed for it.
